A food bike is a two-wheeled trailer pulled by a bicycle (or electric bike) on which fresh food can be prepared and sold. It is a low-capital, low-footprint alternative to a food truck that can be used by food entrepreneurs to efficiently and profitably enter the mobile food market. We anticipate being able to reduce capital expense by up to 90% to get a food bike up and running compared with a food truck, which can cost around $75,000 to purchase and properly outfit. We estimate that food bike entrepreneurs can double their income by becoming sole-proprietors of food bikes. Food truck and restaurant cooks often make as little as $10-12/hour; our goal is for food bike owners to make the equivalent of $20-25/hour. Oakland’s first official food bike, Jian Bing Johnny’s, was made by local fabrication shop Vessel Bikes, and we are now expanding our operations. Fill out our interest form below to learn more about opportunities with food bikes. The food bike is more than just a great business idea; the food bike is the life of the party!
