A food bike is a two-wheeled trailer pulled by a bicycle (or electric bike) on which fresh food can be prepared and sold. It is a low-capital, low-footprint alternative to a food truck that can be used by food entrepreneurs to efficiently and profitably enter the mobile food market. We anticipate being able to reduce capital expense by up to 90% to get a food bike up and running compared with a food truck, which can cost around $75,000 to purchase and properly outfit. We estimate that food bike entrepreneurs can double their income by becoming sole-proprietors of food bikes. Food truck and restaurant cooks often make as little as $10-12/hour; our goal is for food bike owners to make the equivalent of $20-25/hour. Oakland’s first official food bike, Jian Bing Johnny’s, was made by local fabrication shop Vessel Bikes, and we are now expanding our operations.
